SUMMARY:Lunch with Dr. Xin Feng
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Xin Feng is an alumnus of our Ph.D. program. He has had a very successful career in quantitative finance.  \nDr. Feng is eager to share his insights on upcoming opportunities in the field with our students.  He will discuss how utilizing the resources and courses offered by our Statistics Department and MA Program can help prepare them for success. For more information\, please refer to the latest edition of the MA Newsletter. \nFrom Dr. Xin Feng:  \n\nAfter getting my PhD\, I worked briefly in the educational testing industry for 9 months\, then started my career in quant trading. Working at hedge funds and a prop desk in a bank\, I primarily worked on statistical arbitrage strategy in global equity and managed futures strategies. Luckily I experienced the whole flow from building alpha\, to constructing portfolio and doing execution. \n \nAfter working in New York for 10 years\, I set up WizardQuant in China in 2013. Starting with just a few people\, we have grown into a multi-billion quant hedge fund with a team of over 150 people in 5 different offices in New York\, Shanghai (headquarters)\, Beijing\, Shenzhen\, Chengdu. We work with data every day\, try to understand the patterns in the data\, forecast the movement of financial instruments and see the result almost instantaneously\, which is quite exciting.

SUMMARY:Meet Professor Chenyang Zhong
DESCRIPTION:Continuing with our Informal Talks with Faculty Series\, Find the invitation and RSVP in the MA Statistics Newsletter on Wednesday\, December 7.  Refreshments will be provided.  \nRead more about Chenyang Zhong. \nSUMMARY by Milton Lim; MA Statistics Student; President\, Columbia Statistics Club: \n“Professor Chenyang Zhong completed his PhD in Statistics at Stanford University in 2022 under Prof. Persi Diaconis\, a well-known magician and mathematician. Diaconis is famous for proving that a deck of cards must be shuffled at least 7 times to reach a sufficient level of randomness. (Interestingly\, if a deck of 52 cards is perfectly dovetail-shuffled 8 times\, it returns to its original order exactly!). Chenyang also has research interests in MCMC methodology\, random matrix theory\, and ranking methods.”

SUMMARY:Lunch with Yongchan Kwon - Informal Faculty Talks with MA Students
DESCRIPTION:Find the invitation in the MA Statistics Newsletter for November 9.   \nLunch with Professor Yongchan Kwon.  \nSUMMARY by Milton Lim; MA Statistics Student; President\, Columbia Statistics Club: \n“Professor Yongchan Kwon completed his PhD in Statistics at Seoul National University and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Stanford University. Yongchan at presented his research interests in interpretable machine learning and data valuation through a game-theoretic approach. Using Shapley values to attribute the marginal contribution of each feature allows for more intuitive model explanations. Shapley values are popular because they satisfy the axioms of efficiency\, symmetry and linearity. Yongchan’s work has focussed on generalizing these Shapley values\, such as Beta Shapley which relaxes the efficiency axiom.”
