SUMMARY:Meet Professor Chenyang Zhong
DESCRIPTION:Continuing with our Informal Talks with Faculty Series\, Find the invitation and RSVP in the MA Statistics Newsletter on Wednesday\, December 7.  Refreshments will be provided.  \nRead more about Chenyang Zhong. \nSUMMARY by Milton Lim; MA Statistics Student; President\, Columbia Statistics Club: \n“Professor Chenyang Zhong completed his PhD in Statistics at Stanford University in 2022 under Prof. Persi Diaconis\, a well-known magician and mathematician. Diaconis is famous for proving that a deck of cards must be shuffled at least 7 times to reach a sufficient level of randomness. (Interestingly\, if a deck of 52 cards is perfectly dovetail-shuffled 8 times\, it returns to its original order exactly!). Chenyang also has research interests in MCMC methodology\, random matrix theory\, and ranking methods.”

SUMMARY:LAST DAY to request PASS/FAIL or R CREDIT
DESCRIPTION:GSAS does not allow any changes to the selection of a Letter Grade or Pass/Fail or R credit after Thursday\, November 17\, 2022.  \nCourses taken for PASS/FAIL or R Credit DO NOT COUNT TOWARD GRADUATION.  A class must have a LETTER GRADE to count toward graduation.  \nAfter November 17\, the choice of Pass/Fail will remain.  \nA course taken for Pass/Fail cannot be taken a second time to receive a better grade.* \nCOURSES TAKEN FOR R GRADE OR PASS/FAIL\nDuring the semester there are important dates to remember including the LAST DAY to DROP COURSES and the LAST DAY for R Grade & PASS/FAIL.  These deadlines are strictly followed.** \n\nCourses taken for R or Pass/Fail do not count towards the MA Statistics degree.\nCore classes may not be taken for R or P/F.\nClick HEREfor further details on the “Pass/Fail” grade.\nNot all courses are eligible for either P/F or R.\n\nFor P/F\, check in SSOL to see if the course is eligible for Pass/Fail and select.\nR grades must be approved by the course instructor.  You must make an arrangement with the instructor.\n\n\nClick HERE for further details on the “R” grade.\n\nThe Faculty Adviser should be notified before the status of a course is changed. \n\n*Students are not allowed to re-register for a course to improve letter grade.  (The only exception would be for a Grade of F which must be approved by the instructor\, the Faculty Director of the MA Program\, and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.  While the second grade will be used to determine graduation\, the original “F” will remain on the transcript and will affect the cumulative GPA that is visible on the transcript.) \n\n\nReview REQUIREMENTS of the MA Degree.\nReview GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING.\n\n**Deadlines for half-semester courses are different from full-semester courses.  Half-semester courses must be dropped within the first two weeks.  The deadline to change the grade of a half-semester course to Pass/Fail is the first day of the fifth week of the course.  Core courses may NOT be taken for Pass/Fail or R Credit.

SUMMARY:Lunch with Yongchan Kwon - Informal Faculty Talks with MA Students
DESCRIPTION:Find the invitation in the MA Statistics Newsletter for November 9.   \nLunch with Professor Yongchan Kwon.  \nSUMMARY by Milton Lim; MA Statistics Student; President\, Columbia Statistics Club: \n“Professor Yongchan Kwon completed his PhD in Statistics at Seoul National University and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Stanford University. Yongchan at presented his research interests in interpretable machine learning and data valuation through a game-theoretic approach. Using Shapley values to attribute the marginal contribution of each feature allows for more intuitive model explanations. Shapley values are popular because they satisfy the axioms of efficiency\, symmetry and linearity. Yongchan’s work has focussed on generalizing these Shapley values\, such as Beta Shapley which relaxes the efficiency axiom.”

SUMMARY:Lunch with Dr. Dobrin Marchev - Informal Faculty Talks with MA Students
DESCRIPTION:Lunch with Dr. Dobrin Marchev – Informal Faculty Talks with MA Students \nThis event is especially valuable for those who are interested in exploring a Mentored Research Project (GR 5398) in the future.   \nTalk title:  “Monte Carlo Methods in Statisics” \nJoin us for this informal get together.  We will hear briefly about Dr. Marchev’s interests in research.  There will be time for everyone to ask questions and introduce themselves.  \n\n\nInvitation and RSVP can be found in the weekly MA Statistics Newsletter. \n \nReview of the Event by Milton Lim; MA Statistics Student; President\, Columbia Statistics Club\n“Professor Dobin Marchev completed his PhD in Statistics at University of Florida in 2004. Dobrin presented his research interests in Markov Chain Monte Carlo\, which has revolutionized the computation of Bayesian models in allowing sampling from intractable probability distributions. Dobrin gave a historical overview of MCMC\, including its origin story during the Manhattan Project\, where the first cyclotron (particle accelerator) was built in the basement of Pupin Laboratories of Columbia! Since then\, the original algorithm has evolved through many variations\, such as Metropolis-Hastings\, Gibbs sampling\, and Hamiltonian MCMC.”\n
