Applications to the MA in Statistics are submitted through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). All application materials must be sent directly to GSAS, not to the Statistics Department. For information on how to apply, including application requirements and deadlines, please visit the Columbia GSAS application page.

Track Declaration Process

The MA program offers multiple tracks (concentrations). As part of the admissions process, applicants will be contacted by the department after submitting their application to declare their preferred track. The track declaration process is explained in detail here.

After an application is submitted, the Department of Statistics will follow up with instructions and a timeline for confirming track selection as part of the admissions process.

Before Contacting the Department

BA/MA OPTION

Current Columbia undergraduates may consider the BA/MA Option in the Statistics Department. Interested students should schedule a meeting with the Director of the Undergraduate Program, Professor Daniel Rabinowitz, before the end of their sophomore year. During this meeting, eligible courses for transfer into the MA program and an overall application timeline will be discussed.

The optimal time to apply to the BA/MA program is during the junior year. Once admitted, students will be assigned an MA faculty advisor to assist with course transfer and MA program planning.

Only after enrolling in GSAS may BA/MA students receive transfer credit for 12–15 credits (up to four courses) and up to one Registration Unit (RU) for graduate-level courses (4000-level and above) taken beyond the 124-credit undergraduate degree requirement. Eligible courses must not have been applied toward the undergraduate major, concentration, or general education requirements.

The GRE is optional for BA/MA applicants. Additional information about the BA/MA option is available on the GSAS website.
