Application Status and Transcripts

  • Status Check: Log into the GSAS Application System portal to monitor application status.

  • Fall Grade Reports: Applicants who apply while enrolled in an undergraduate program must upload an updated transcript or submit their Fall Term Grade Report via the Application Status page as soon as fall grades become available.

Application Checklist & Requirements

  • Application Timeline: Applications for Fall open annually in September. Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Academic Prerequisites

Basic minimum preparation includes:

  • Calculus: At least three semesters.

  • Linear Algebra: At least one semester with in-depth coverage (matrices, vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues/eigenvectors, canonical forms, and applications).

  • Advanced Calculus: Recommended.

  • Additional Preparation: Experience in theoretical or applied probability and statistics, as well as programming proficiency in R, Python, or SAS, is advantageous.

  • Due to the large number of applications received, the MA in Statistics staff does not answer inquiries about specific applications nor give advice or direction to applicants before they are admitted. Although we appreciate interest in the program, please note that emails sent to the department expressing interest have no bearing on the outcome of your application being reviewed. Your candidacy is decided upon by your application materials. Any specific interest and rationale should be conveyed in your personal statement within the application. 

Any deficiencies in prerequisites should be completed prior to applying.

Standardized Tests & Materials

  • Letters of Recommendation: For requirements of at least two academic references, please visit the GSAS  website at: https://www.gsas.columbia.edu/content/admissions-supporting-materials

  • GRE Exam: Recommended but not required. The GRE cannot be substituted with the GMAT. There is no minimum required score. Average scores and admissions statistics are not published.

  • TOEFL / IELTS: Required for international students as outlined on the GSAS International Applicants page.

  • Statement of Academic Purpose (~1,000 words): Describe your background and past work in statistics, your goals for graduate study at GSAS, and your future professional aspirations.

  • Personal Statement (~1,000 words): Explain how your personal experiences and background will contribute to the diversity of perspectives in the GSAS entering class and the broader Columbia community.
